Philip the Bard's Harappan Blog

I’ve read more than my share of ancient Earth history. Back before the Green Revolution, in the twentieth century, smart women often found it difficult to find relationships with men. Apparently men back than were intimidated by these smart women.

Now in the twenty-fifth century we don’t have that problem anymore. Women and men are equal in all issues but biology. That doesn’t mean that dating and romance were easy for a young, very smart, Max Gavaskar.

Max was a very focused young woman. Her studies were almost all that mattered to her. Her parents, her mother inparticular, wanted Max to have a well rounded life. In that vein Max was signed up for horse riding lessons, music lessons, art appreciation and dating.

Mrs. Gavaskar told me once that she felt it important that Max have “social skills”. Being a brilliant scientist was not enough. Without the ability to interact well with people no one would ever know how smart she was.

Max Gavaskar has always been a beauty. People who meet her now see someone who has aged well. She is beautiful well into her early hundreds, but when she was young she was exotic and sexy too. There was no dearth of suitors. It’s just that Max wasn’t that interested.

Mom insisted that Max go out on a date at least once a month. Most of them went well enough and there is a list of men who claim to have dated the Mother. Max says she can’t remember any of them. Some of them have told posterity that Max could be fun and engaging but often was distracted as if she was working out some physics problem in her head while trying to converse about the mundane things that are discussed on typical first dates.

Tomorrow; I’ll start talking about a few of the specific dates that history remembers. In particular the disasterous first date.
